We're living, learning, and loving right where we are.

Plants as Medicine

As we work to live closer in step with nature we are also growing in our knowledge of the power of the plants around us. Morning hikes typically include some plant identification and subsequent research about that plant. The more we learn and grow in confidnece the less we find ourselves using medications from the store. There's a sense of peace in knowing we can forage medicine in our local environment.

Hands down, the simplist way to make plants into medicine is via tincture. We make our tinctures from dried herbs, many of which we have either grown in the garden or foraged from other areas on our property, and vodka. It's easy, and shelf stable for many years to come!

The second mode of applying herbal medicine is via a salve. Sometimes this is a simple as making an infused oil and other times we'll add some harder ingredients, such as beeswax, to make a travel friendly, long lasting end product.

Finally, we also use herbs in teas, broths, and other items we consume to get their benefits. From lemon balm for its calming effect to pine needles for their ability to disrupt viral replication, we're frequently making herbal infused water for sipping on to meet the needs that arise each day.

Learning more

We have a long way to go in our herbal medicine journey but for now we're enjoying getting our feet wet with a few basics. The possibilities are astounding and it's easy to get overwhelmed so we encourage you to start simple and safe. Stick with well known plants and even order them from a reputable herb store if you arent confident in identification.
